Original Tiffany lamps are lamps that were designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany and his design studio. The most famous were the stained leaded glass lamps. Tiffany lamps are considered part of the Art Nouveau movement.

Due to Tiffany’s dominant influence on the style, the term ‘Tiffany lamp’ or ‘Tiffany style lamp’ has been often used to refer to stained leaded glass lamps even those not made by Louis Comfort Tiffany’s company. The color is in the glass itself, it is not painted on. The styles, designs and innovation are what makes original Tiffany lamps world-famous.

Louis Comfort Tiffany was born in 1848, the son of the founder of the famous jewelry store. He made his name early as an interior decorator to the rich and famous in the 1880s. His business at the time, Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company, produced a variety of objects ranging from his famed leaded-glass windows and lamps to all kinds of objects in enamel and carved wood, including furniture. He designed and manufactured textiles, and rugs to complete the interiors he created for his wealthy clientele including President Chester A. Arthur and the Havemeyers, he was hired to decorate the first-floor of Mark Twain’s home in Hartford, Conn.

A wonderful example of an original Tiffany lamp is this Tiffany Studio’s Banded Dogwood Table Lamp. 18 in. Dia. domical shade signed Tiffany Studios New York 1555, geometric brick pattern background in an exceptional mottled dichroic glass which is green when off and fiery orange when lit.

The banded border is wrapped with mottled pink dogwood flowers having yellow centers, green leaves and entwined amber branches. Five very minor single line scattered heat cracks, aperture measures 4.25 in. diameter a.
